If you are pricing out a machine for your shop floor and you aren't sure how to get the best deal, or what the terms should be, there are some things you want to take into consideration. It's important to make sure that you get the machine when you need it, regardless if it's a CNC machine or something that just welds, and that the machine is high quality. Here are a few of the things you want to talk with the machining company about when you get an estimate.
Who Pays for Materials?
If the machining company pays for the cost of materials then you don't have to worry about paying up front for work that isn't completed yet. Some machining companies require a deposit with a purchase order and they will use that to pay for the materials and that is what you want to see in the contract. You don't want to put out a lot of money and end up without the product you were imagining.
What are the Payment Terms?
The payment terms are important, especially if you can't pay for the machine all at once. Find a company that is willing to take a deposit and down payment, and then two other payments after you see the progress of the machine and you get closer to the completion date. If the entire cost is due upfront, or if you need to have it all paid before halfway through the build, this may not be economical for you.
